Deciduous shrub or small tree. Leaves linear-elliptic when young, sometimes obovate-elliptic when mature, bright green above, whitish beneath; margin finely serrate. Flowers in catkin-like spikes, sexes separate on different trees. Fruit a capsule, splitting lengthwise to release tufted windborne seeds.
