Description of Karyolysidae

provided by BioPedia
Adeleorine coccidia, this family contains parasites of the erythrocytes and other cells of amphibia and reptiles; trasmission by blood-feeding arachnids (ticks or mites) in which syzygy, sporogony, and primary merogony take place; karyolysids or the dactylosomatids may represent the sister taxa to the piroplasms of veterinary importance; life histories of the karyolysids and piroplasms are similar and they share definitive hosts, which suggest an historical association of these adeleorines with the genera Babesia and Theileria.
