Favors rocky rapids of cool, clear mountain streams. Scrapes algae and insects from the rocks. Breeds in spring-summer, young found in deep pools below rapids. Occasionally caught by anglers and subsistence fishers (Ref. 7248).

The Pungwe chiselmouth (Labeobarbus pungweensis) is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Labeobarbus is found in the Pungwe River and Buzi River in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and the Ruo River in Malawi.
