A shrub (or tree?) ; twigs, petioles, rachis, and branches of the inflorescence unarmed, densely ferruginous-pilose, the pubescence of the under surface of the leaflets less dense ; petioles terete or nearly so ; leaves odd-pinnate, 2-3 dm. long ; leaflets 9-11, opposite, elliptic or oblong-elliptic, 4-8.5 cm. long, 2-4 cm. broad, obtusish at the apex, obliquely rounded at the base, entire or sparsely glandular-crenate above the middle, short-petiolulate or subsessile, the veins prominent beneath ; inflorescence terminal, paniculate, 7-10 cm. long, its branches spreading ; flowers unknown ; pedicels shorter than the fruit ; follicles ovoid, 5-6 mm. long, 4-5 mm. broad, more or less ferruginous-pilose, the glands of the surface depressed or elevated, dark-brown or blackish ; seeds ovoid, 4 mm. long, black, shining.
Type locality : Mina de Dolores, Mexico. Distribution : Known only from the type locality.

Zanthoxylum ferrugineum Radik.; Dorm. Smith, Bot. Gaz. 24: 391. 1897. An apparently unarmed tree with a grayish bark, the young parts clothed with dense, fugacious, ferruginous wool, the hairs jointed, few-branched or fasciculate-stellate ; leaves odd-pinnate, crowded near the ends of the branchlets, about 24 cm. long and 8-12 cm. broad ; leaflets 13-17, opposite or nearly so, subsessile, oblong to ovate-oblong, 4-6.5 cm. long, 2-2.5 cm. broad, membranous, acute to acuminate at the apex, inequilateral at the base, nearly entire, or crenate and bearing large glands in each sinus, beneath densely and minutely pellucid-glandular; panicles densely flowered, 6-10 cm. long, woolly-pilose; staminate flowers unknown ; pistillate flowers : pedicels short, often bearing rudimentary flowers at the base instead of bractlets ; sepals wanting; perianth-segments 9 or 10, linear, 2-3 mm. long ; disk short, glabrous ; ovary sessile on the disk, gibbous, obovoid, convex on the back, tapering into an eccentric columnar style, tomentose with forked or fasciculate stellate hairs, glandular ; stigma depressed-capitate.
Type locality : Near Alajuela, [Costa Rica]. Distribution : Known only from the type locality.
