Suffrutices or small trees, sometimes semi-scandent, with contact dermatitis-causing exudate. Leaves alternate, trifoliolate, margins sharply toothed. Flowers unisexual, in thyrses that are terminal, axillary or both. Male flowers: calyx and corolla 5-partite; disk glabrous, orange, 10-crenulate; stamens 5; pistillode present. Female flowers: calyx, corolla and disk similar to males; staminodes present; ovary 3-carpellate; styles 3, basally adnate and recurved; stigmas 3, capitate; ovule 1, lateral, pendulous. Samara subcircular with marginal wing; 1-locular, with persistent calyx and styles. Seed reniform. [Description contributed by Dr Susan Pell]
