A glabrous diffuse much branched shrub, 1-2 m. high, with a grayish bark armed with straight or recurved brown or grayish stipular prickles 1.5-8 mm. long ; branches short, rigid, more or less zigzag, when young puberulent, glabrous when old ; leaves equally pinnate, rarely odd-pinnate ; petioles winged and thus forming leaflet-like phyllodes 1-6 mm. broad, unarmed or prickly, the prickles when present in pairs above at the apex, or unpaired beneath at or below the apex, the margin recurved, entire or obsoletely crenate, equilateral or nearly so, and bearing a few pellucid glands; leaflets 2, rarely 3, oblonglinear to obovate, 0.3-2 cm. long, 0.1-1 cm. broad, rounded or emarginate at the apex, sessile, rigid, entire or occasionally obsoletely crenate, equilateral or nearly so, not callusbearing at the base, coriaceous, the pellucid gland apical, rarely 1 to several along the margin, above shining, reticulate-veined, beneath paler and obsoletely veined ; flowers sessile, solitary^ or few, glomerate in the axils of the leaves ; staminate flowers unknown ; pistillate flowers : sepals 4, imbricate, free, orbicular or triangular-orbicular, chartaceouscoriaceous, 0.6-0.8 mm. broad, the margin more or less minutely ciliate ; petals 4, oval or ovate, rounded at the apex, much narrower at the base or stipitiform-contracted, 1.5-2 mm. long, 1-1.2 mm. broad, coriaceous, ciliate; gynophore entire, short; gynoecium 2-carpellary ; ovaries sessile on the gynophore ; styles deciduous ; follicles 1 or 2, sessile, obovoid or nearly globose, 3-4 mm. long; seeds nearly globose, 2.5-3 mm. broad, black, shining.
