They are native to Romania, Italy, Ukraine, Finland, Austria, Jordan, France, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, The Netherlands, Balkans, Lebanon, Tunisia, Russia, North America, Sweden, Israel, Portugal, Lithuania, Switzerland, Latvia, Poland, Germany, Estonia, Japan, Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Algeria, Belgium, Azerbaijan, Spain, Armenia, China, Afghanistan, Greece, Denmark, Bulgaria, Syria, Albania, Iran, Turkey, United Kingdom, Palestine, Pakistan, and India. They have simple, broad leaves and loculicidal capsule fruit. Flowers are visited by Iphiclides feisthamelii, hedge brown, giant resin bee, and Common Eastern Bumblebee. Individuals can grow to 0.79 m.
