Sepia peterseni Appellöf, 1886

ILLUSTRATIONS.—Okutani et al., 1987:4; Khromov, 1988b: 177.

DIAGNOSIS.—Arms II of male much longer than other arms, tapering to extremity without suckers. Fins of male triangular posteriorly. Tentacular club with suckers differing in size. Sepion long, narrow. Anterior striae L-shaped. Spine present.

ORIGINAL REFERENCE.—Appellöf, 1886:23.

TYPE LOCALITY.—Japan.

TYPES.—Syntypes: Zoological Museum of Uppsala University, Sweden, No. 148a, 1 male, 105 mm ML. Whereabouts of remaining 2 syntypes not known.

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION.—Kyushu to central Honshu, Japan; South Korea.

Sepia peterseni

Sepia peterseni is a species of cuttlefish native to the western Pacific Ocean. Its natural range stretches south of central Honshū to southern Kyūshū, and it is also present in South Korea. It lives on the inner shelf at depths of between 20 and 100 m.[3]

Sepia peterseni grows to a mantle length of 120 mm.[3] It has an elongated mantle, with a cuttlebone to match.

The type specimen was collected off Japan and is deposited at the Zoologiska Museet in Sweden.[4]
