Locomotive cell usually between 10 and 165 µm with broad, eruptive lobate pseudopodia. Ecto-plasm clear, endoplasm granular with internal ridges. Nucleus oval or spherical, with a granular periphery and a clear centre. No nulceolus (endosome). Cytoplasm without crystals or contractile vacuoles. Cysts spherical with a thick membrane and often 60 or more nuclei. Despite early nomenclatural confusion, the genus is now considered to be restricted to intestines of cockroaches, termites and wood-eating roaches.
