Description of Pedinella tricostata
provided by BioPedia
A typical cell is almost spherical in side view, triangular from the apex. The cell length ranges from 5.4-9.3 microns (mean 6.68 microns). The single emergent flagellum is about 3 times the cell diameter. The mostly unbranced and slender trailing stalk is of highly variable length. Tentacles were not observed. There are typically three chloroplasts, which indicate that the cell has three longitudinal planes of symmetry. Cells about to divide with six chloroplasts arranged in one tier were not uncommon.
