The band-tailed fruiteater (Pipreola intermedia) is a species of bird in the family Cotingidae. It is found at high altitudes in the subtropical and tropical moist montane forests of Bolivia and Peru. It is a plump green bird with chevron-shaped markings on the flanks and a tail with a black band and white tip. Males have a black head and bib and a narrow yellow collar, while females lack these features. Both sexes have red beaks and legs. This is a relatively common species with a wide range, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated its conservation status as being "least concern".
The band-tailed fruiteater grows to a length of about 19 cm (7 in). The adult male has a black head glossed with green, and a black bib. The bib is surrounded by a bright yellow margin. The upper parts of the body are mid-green, and there are black, chevron-shaped markings on the flanks. The tail has a green base, a black band and a whitish tip. The underparts are yellowish, mottled or streaked with green. The female resembles the male but lacks the glossy black head, the black bib and the yellow collar, and the black bar on the tail may be fainter. Both male and female have a yellow iris and a red beak and legs. This bird is very similar to the green-and-black fruiteater but that species is smaller, the bib is suffused with green and the yellow area surrounding it is less distinct.[2]
This is a bird of the mountain forests clothing the eastern flanks of the Andes in South America. Its range extends from central Peru to western Bolivia, generally at altitudes from 2,300 to 3,000 metres (7,500 to 9,800 ft). At the southern end of its range it may be found at lower altitudes. It is usually present at higher elevations than the green-and-black fruiteater.[2]

El frutero colifajado[4] (Pipreola intermedia), también denominado frutero de cola bandeada (en Perú) o granicera de cola franjeada,[3] es una especie de ave paseriforme perteneciente al género Pipreola de la familia Cotingidae. Es nativo de los Andes del occidente de América del Sur.
Se distribuye por la pendiente oriental de los Andes peruanos, desde La Libertad y San Martín al sur hasta el oeste de Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).[5]
Esta especie es considerada poco común en su hábitat natural, el estrato medio y bajo de bosques húmedos tropicales montanos entre 2300 y 3000 m de altitud, pero más bajo (hasta los 1500 m) hacia el sur.[6]

La especie P. intermedia fue descrita por primera vez por el ornitólogo polaco Wladyslaw Taczanowski en 1884 bajo el nombre científico Pipreola viridis intermedia; localidad tipo «Maraynioc, centro de Perú».[5]
El nombre genérico femenino «Pipreola» es un diminutivo del género Pipra, demostrando alguna afinidad entre los mismos;[7] y el nombre de la especie «intermedia», proviene del latín «intermedius»: intermediario, que está entre otros dos.[8]
Está hermanada con Pipreola riefferii, y ya han sido tratadas como conespecíficas; sin embargo, además de la diferencias de plumaje (especialmente el color de la cola), las zonas de distribución de ambas se sobreponen en el centro de Perú, y en algunas áreas ocurren juntas, a pesar de que sus zonas difieren altitudinalmente.[5]
