The Siamese fichtin fish (Betta splendens, /ˈbɛtə/) an aa kent as betta, is a popular species o freshwatter aquarium fish. The name o the genus is derived frae ikan bettah, taken frae a local dialect o Malay.[3] The wild auncestors o this fish are native tae the rice paddies o Thailand, Laos, Cambodie an Vietnam[4] an are cried pla-kad (lit. bitin fish) in Thai or trey krem in Khmer.
